Under the auspices of the Executive Committee for the Special Sutra Offering Experience at Hieizan Enryakuji, NAKED will plan, direct, and produce the wellness retreat program “HIEIZAN ENRYAKUJI Exclusive Sutra Offering”, to be held from Friday, November 21 to Saturday, November 29, 2025 (excluding Sunday, November 23). This program includes a rare sutra offering at the normally inaccessible Hokkesoji-in East Pagoda, a special exhibition of the Important Cultural Property “Lotus Sutra in Gold and Silver Ink on Navy Paper”, and more. In the evenings, guests will enjoy a special Gagaku performance and autumn foliage illumination at Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine—offering a wellness retreat deeply rooted in the spiritual culture of Japan.

This project is a new form of travel proposed by NAKED: a uniquely Japanese wellness retreat that harmonizes the body and mind through cultural experiences rooted in Japanese spirituality. At the World Heritage site Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei, the program offers a rare opportunity to experience a wellness retreat that includes: – a special viewing of the Important Cultural Property “Lotus Sutra in Gold and Silver Ink on Navy Paper,” normally not open to the public, – a sutra copying experience using special navy paper under the guidance of monks, – and a sacred sutra offering at the Hokkesoji-in East Pagoda. This exclusive experience within the spiritual heart of Enryakuji Temple, which symbolizes its core teachings, offers a profound connection to the spiritual culture of Mount Hiei. The program also includes a specially prepared “Yakushi Gozen” meal at Enryakuji Kaikan—featuring dishes that represent the temple’s principal deity, Yakushi Nyorai, as well as the attendant deities Nikko and Gakko Bosatsu, and the Twelve Divine Generals, all expressed through traditional tableware. To this traditional Buddhist meal, we add modern elements such as a side dish made with Japan-originated “mycoprotein,” providing a shojin ryori experience suited to contemporary lifestyles. In the evening, guests will attend a special gagaku (ancient court music) performance and nighttime worship event at Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine—a symbol of Shinbutsu-shūgō, the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism. This seamless, all-inclusive tour—covering transportation and accommodations at Enryakuji Kaikan—resolves accessibility issues in the Hieizan Sakamoto area while delivering a high-value cultural experience. Through this initiative, we aim to support the sustainable inheritance and revitalization of local cultural heritage.
